Chapter 8:
Legal and Ethical Use of Technology
Ethics
in Practice
This activity aims for the students to
determine wrong acts or doing with the use of school technologies.
Below are the different situations in the use of school
technologies. Place yourself in each situation and internalize on the action
you will do to solve the issues.
1.
You as a teacher have purchased educational
software for use in your class. Your colleague who is teaching the same subject
borrows the purchased software and later installs the software in her own
computer without your knowledge. You are aware that what she did was against
the law. What will you do with this situation?
·
From
the ethical use of technology it is against the law that borrowing without the permission
of the owner is strictly forbidden. If I were the teacher who is in this
situation first thing I will do is to inform that teacher the wrong thing she’d done then, I will try to
explain the proper ways of copying software from another. Explaining the right
and proper way of getting software is the first offense I can give and will not
be tolerated further more to avoid sanctions.
2.
You instruct your students that whenever
in the computer laboratory, internet access will be allowed for educational
purposes only. However, three of your students accessed the internet for
downloading of internet games and play while you discuss the lesson. What will
you do with these three students? What will you suggest to the school heads to
limit the access of downloading internet games?
·
The
same with number one question, punishing the students won’t do on their first
offense. There are different reasons why they might done that maybe because,
they don’t know yet the written rules therefore as a first act, it should be
told the rules of the internet laboratory accessed. Afterwards, I will inform
the head to strictly monitor students who are using the computers to forbid any
misconduct.
3.
You (as a student) are aware that one of
your classmates is being cyberbullied by some of your classmates. The victim is
losing her self-confidence and self-esteem due to the cyberbullying
experiences. What will you do to help the victim and to stop cyberbullying?
·
As
a concern citizen and a friend to my classmate, since I’ve already known the
laws I should not tolerate and watch them as they cyber-bullied my classmate. I
will try to moderate the situation and motivate the victim to not listen about
everything they say. Simultaneously, I will immediately seek for counselor to
give them the right or proper conduct to avoid cyber-bullying or worst give
them the appropriate sanctions.
4.
While the class is busy doing their
activity in the computer laboratory, you were requested by your teacher to ask
the computer laboratory technician to assist in trouble shooting the computer
unit. As you approached the technician, you saw that he was watching a
malicious movie. The technician then immediately stopped the movie and told you
just to stay quiet. You are aware that it is against the policy of the school.
What will you do with this situation? Will you really just keep quiet like what
the technician has told you?
·
I
will report him to the head or to my teacher then, it’s up to my teacher if she
will report him to the school head. But, I believe that everybody deserves a
second chance hence, the school should gave him the chance to recall the school
policy in terms of being a school technician and if actions still repeatedly do
then, laws will make its own way to punish the person.

Assessing
Effective Implementation of School Policies on the Use of Educational
Technology
This
activity aims to determine the appropriateness and effectiveness of policies on
the use of educational technology being employed in schools.
Get
a copy of your school’s policies on the use of educational technology/computers
in the laboratory. Assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of each policy
by answering the questions below. Support your answer with a brief explanation.
1.
Are the policies appropriate for the use
of school technology?
·
Yes,
there is an appropriate labels and procedures on how to effectively use the
computers and there are also precautions.
2.
Are the policies effective?
·
Sometimes.
Because according to the resource teacher there are still some students who
didn’t follow the rules. With this, strictly monitoring the students while
using the laboratory should be given attention.
3.
Are the policies stated clearly?
·
The
policies are stated clearly and described well together with the sanctions if
by some manners, it’s been violated.
4.
Do the policies say what academic
officials, teachers, staff, and students should and should not do with the
school’s technology?
·
Yes,
only the official technician could handle things that related with technology
inside campus except when necessary needed to act personally.
5.
Are the penalties for violating the
policies stated?
·
Yes.
The sanctions are being stated clearly included on the policies of the school
laboratory usage. There are penalty levels for every violated law.
6.
Are the policies fair enough with all
the users of school technology?
·
The
policies being implemented were done through processes, it considers many
aspects before it was approved therefore, I believe that before the policies
even take place the consideration for fair use and judgment are being considered
hence, for all kind of users.
7.
Are there policies that you would like
to remove or revise? Why? What will you change them with?
·
Actually,
the policies are good enough but, to make amendments there should be a
re-consideration of every rule depending on every aspect. With that, we should
be able to monitor if the policies are being followed.

Proposal
This
activity aims to develop student’s awareness with the do’s and don’ts in using
school technologies.
This activity will be done by group (with 3
members in each group). Imagine that one of you is an academic official, a
teacher, and a student. Being representatives of the different sectors of
educational institution, propose school policies on the effective use of
technology in teaching and learning. Write your proposal below.
